5 for 5
We’ll call it the 5 for 5. This is a challenge for you to meditate 5 minutes for 5 days. Remember the commercial, this is your brain on drugs? Try having a brain without meditation. Depending on the drug, it might be even worse. We’re going to talk about the benefits of meditation and why we don’t meditate, so we can let go of that. Hopefully your monkey brain will do its best to follow along here.
Now take a deep breath and feel the air go in through your nose and breathe out that anxiety. Alright, let’s try this again.
Instead of meditating I would rather do something that feels good like binging Netflix, Sex, or Video Games.
Awesome, you must be human too. Of course, we would rather have what feels good and receive instant gratification. The problem is what happens to us over time when we live like this. Social Media aka “Mind Heroin” has us fixated on the idea that things happen instantaneously. Those programmers that create it must be pretty good, huh? Yep, and so are their paychecks.
Let’s agree these external things feel awesome and we love them which is why we compulsively do them. Meditating is not about becoming a Monk that forgoes all daily pleasures. This is about incorporating meditation, so you can experience what feels good in life from a different perspective. Instead of needing it you’ll be able to appreciate and enjoy it.
Now that we all agree the excuses are human nature, why really should we meditate?
Simply put, our mind needs it. We need to have a healthy state of mind if we want to be the best. RAAM! is about being the best. Supporting overall health and wellness with a huge piece focusing on clarity. To achieve clarity (we define as “clearness or lucidity as to perception or understanding”) then we need to let go of that which holds our mental state hostage. Unfortunately, only seeking out dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and feel-good endorphins, will leave us with a crash of emptiness.
We need balance but most importantly we need relief. We can find that relief in letting go of the highs and lows in life by meditating.
Got it, mediation is helpful which is well known. How am I going to enjoy it?
Fun fact, you may hate sitting by yourself and listening to your all over the place inner thoughts. That is ok. It also means that you can find a different way to meditate. There is active movement meditation like walking focusing on breath and letting the thoughts go (super helpful if you have an attention disorder), breathwork, guided meditation (thousands of free videos on YouTube), mindfulness, mantra, or trying different settings like parks or sensory deprivation tanks.
If you are in South Florida, check out my friends Dan and Rochelle’s place Transitions Float Studio. I’ll make another post later about how my life changed by floating 1 hour a week for an entire year.
5 for 5
Any goal or lifestyle change is accomplished in small increments. The challenge is simple. Try meditating at the same time every day for 5 days. It is literally only 5 minutes. If your life changes, do a bit more homework into different styles of meditation you think you’d benefit from. Change it to 7 days a week. The week after up it 5 more minutes and do that each weak. In 1 month, you would be at 20 minutes per week going on 25. That’s a healthy amount and certainly sufficient for a good foundation.
Clarity will fuel all aspects of your life.
